Earlier this week a few of the offices hardier souls braved the wind and dropping temperatures, picked up their trowels and headed along to help out at one of Jesmond’s hidden gems.
Jesmond Community Orchard is tucked away in a quiet corner of St Andrews Cemetery and provides opportunities for growing fruit for the benefit of the local community. The Orchard helps foster a sense of community spirit by encouraging local residents and schools to become involved in the planning, preparation, planting, cultivation and harvesting of the fruit. Through regular events and activities the Orchard is steadily building up a committed group of volunteers who have an interest in growing food and caring for the environment.
Chris, Richard and Kirstin met with Fiona Clarke and a few of the other volunteers who each give up their time to help keep this valuable community resource running. We hope to continue being involved in the future and look forward to sampling the fruits of our labour!
Gardening sessions are held for those interested in helping to maintain the orchard on a weekly and monthly basis during the growing season.
