Hatcham Temple Grove provides the primary stage of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College for pupils between 3 and 10yrs old.
Following a fire this inner city school was refurbished and extended for its re-launch as a free school. The site is typical of many Victorian era schools – tight and limited in external learning space.
As a response, the concept for the landscape proposals was based on multi-uses: embedding flexibility in all spaces so that they can be used in multiple ways.
New life for a Victorian school and playground
The landscape proposals include a range of facilities including working gardens, a science garden, a nature garden, play equipment, a performance area with amphitheatre, and a multi-use games area.
Through careful masterplanning, the external learning spaces associated with the school have been maximised. The result is a welcoming, vibrant and imaginative landscape for learning and play.
