Saadiyat International School

Client: TDIC

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE

OOBE worked with Aedas to explore the feasibility of a proposed school to be located at the entrance to the cultural district of Saadiyat Island. A simple approach to the organisation of the school established all of the public and community facilities to the northern edge of the site with gradually more private teaching and learning spaces to the south. Complementing this is the progression of pupils through the school from the Kindergarten, the flagship pavilion to the north, through the junior school and then to the senior school.

A learning campus woven into its context

A series of options were explored which established the design principles with a weave in the landscape joining all the buildings on the site with the wider masterplan for Manaret precinct. Courtyard spaces located within the heart of the school provide external learning spaces which complement the adjacent internal homebases. Sports facilities are in a consolidated location which allows zoning for community use. Geometries are pulled through the school into the landscape to strengthen the relationship between indoors and out with canopy structures re-emerg¬ing as shelters or small stages/pavilions in the protected play areas.
