Great Charles Street

A ‘necklace’ of key spaces.

After the success of three MODA Living PRS developments, OOBE developed the landscape design and public realm for a vibrant new residential scheme in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter Conservation Area.

Inspired by the Jewellery Quarter’s rich heritage, OOBE’s design for Great Charles Street echoes the area’s characterful passageways and courtyards. A unique “necklace” of interconnected spaces offers a vibrant mix of uses, from social dining and markets to co-working areas. Relaxing green havens weave throughout the development, with secluded resident gardens, a central lawn, and two rooftop terraces. Sustainable features like green roofs and water-saving measures contribute to a comfortable living environment, all within a stone’s throw of Snowhill Station, the Jewellery Quarter, and the city centre.

Birmingham’s Big City Plan, a 20-year regeneration scheme, is underway. The Council is pressing on with building homes, green spaces, and cycling routes to transform the city centre.

Inspiration came from the unique location. The design picks up on the traditional narrow passageways and internal courtyards of the Jewellery Quarter, reflected in surface finishes and street furniture. A ‘necklace’ of key spaces each has its own character. Flexibility provides opportunities for external markets, dining, and additional leisure events. At ground level, residents can enjoy small secluded pockets with informal seating, planting areas and a central lawn. Two roof terraces provide further opportunities to unwind in secluded and informal surroundings.

The wider site setting is enhanced, and connections flow to Snowhill Train Station, the Jewellery Quarter and the City Centre. Two green roofs offer additional space for wildlife, help to reduce storm water runoff and contribute to a reduction in energy costs with increased thermal resistance and evaporative cooling. floorscape, street furniture and gates.

Through extensive public consultation and working closely with Birmingham City Council, OOBE has been part of a multi-disciplinary team that has delivered an exciting and contemporary design for modern city centre living. Its 722 new rental homes, gym, green spaces, roof terraces, communal lounges, co-working space and ground floor boutique retail and café-bars contribute to Birmingham City Council’s ‘Big City Plan’ to create 5,000 new homes whilst valuing the city’s heritage and cultural assets.
