Woodham Academy
BACKGROUND
OOBE are working alongside Space Architects on Woodham Academy. Our team was appointed to design the surrounding landscape, creating a smooth integration between the new school building and the existing community. Sustainability is paramount on this project. The “Net Zero Carbon in Operation” target incorporates a fantastic green roof across the entire building. This not only contributes to energy efficiency but also fosters a beautiful visual connection with the surrounding environment.
We recognise the importance of safeguarding existing community spaces. Our landscape design maximises the site’s legibility, ensuring a clear flow and connection between the new school and the existing playing fields. This allows the community to continue enjoying these valuable spaces while welcoming the new academy.
THE CONCEPT & DEVELOPMENT
The role of landscape in the scheme has been to create a masterplan for the site which is responsive to the parameters of: Woodham Academy’s aspirations and DFE guidelines and its response to the site’s unique opportunities and constraints.
During the design process the nature, typology and scale of the evolving external spaces were carefully examined and considered. The landscape proposals have been presented and discussed with the client team, users, public and statutory consultees resulting in a design that reflects the comments and feedback from these meetings and events.
The green roof, together with the existing and carefully preserved trees, will create a cohesive and visually attractive environment.
RESULTS
We have provided an external learning environment which will assist the school in realising its vision for maximising achievement amongst its learners and create stimulating outdoor learning and play experiences. The suite of spaces are designed to accommodate a range of uses to suit the formal curriculum and the informal and social activities of pupils to support curriculum delivery and community activities.
