Morpeth Leisure Centre

A valuable resource for residents and visitors

BACKGROUND

OOBE was appointed to develop landscape plans for a high-quality leisure facility in Morpeth, envisioned to become a new destination hub. A key aspect of this project was to design flexible spaces that address the area’s flooding issues, particularly those experienced in 2008. The site posed unique challenges due to its limited size and proximity to the River Wansbeck.

A sweeping boulevard along the riverfront rises to an entrance plaza, offering stunning views and ample space for alfresco dining at the adjacent café. Retaining the mature trees was crucial as they form an integral part of the site’s character, providing shelter and shade for the proposed sunken library garden. This tranquil garden, accessible by steps from the plaza, features seating made from repurposed bricks from former site buildings, creating raised walls surrounded by planted areas with new trees and ornamental species.

A proposed rain garden along the southern elevation will act as a soft buffer to the building’s edge, while the library’s eastern side opens to a terrace with an accessible ramp and steps leading to an art garden and small amphitheatre. This space is ideal for readings and poetry classes, enhancing the cultural and social appeal of the facility.

RESULTS

OOBE has adopted a blue-green infrastructure approach, integrating natural elements and sustainable design principles to create a landscape that works harmoniously with the environment. This approach includes softer landscaping treatments that address climatic challenges and enhance the site’s resilience to flooding. The result is a high-quality leisure facility that not only offers a variety of functional and flexible spaces but also promotes environmental sustainability and community well-being. This new destination hub in Morpeth is set to become a vibrant, resilient, and ecologically sensitive addition to the town, providing a valuable resource for residents and visitors alike.
