A unique place for the community to enjoy.

BACKGROUND

OOBE worked alongside Drivers Jonas Deloitte, +3 Architecture, S&P Architects, Buro Happold, and AECOM to design and deliver the largest regeneration scheme in Redcar’s recent history.

THE CONCEPT

The scheme involved transforming a new leisure centre, civic facilities, a business centre, car parking and major public realm into a single and comprehensive redevelopment that would knit together a previously fragmented part of town. The concept for the public realm was taken from the rhythm and flow of movement. Inspiration was also taken from the historic context and nearby beach, which formed the basis for the colour palette and shapes of the bespoke pebble seats.

A truly collaborative approach to engagement with the public, stakeholders and all levels of the Council was undertaken throughout the design process. The public realm proposals were developed to include a significant new public square and boulevard with bespoke seating. This forms a strong relationship to the internal spaces. To deliver a successful scheme that would remain inviting for the long-term and maximise the budget, high quality and robust materials were specified. Accent bespoke elements were used at prime public locations.

RESULTS

The public realm proposals successfully unite a mixture of uses and integrates the scheme into the wider streetscape. Bespoke artwork by local artist Kathryn Hodgkinson, incorporated into buildings and public realm helps to create a unique place for the community to enjoy. The scheme has received numerous awards including RICS North East Renaissance Award for Regeneration: Winner and Civic Trust National and Regional finalist.
