Oldham Academies

BACKGROUND

OOBE’s successful bid to design three new Academies in Oldham as part of a £70 million funding package through the Academies framework showcases their expertise in transforming challenging sites into functional and inspiring educational environments.

The sites for the new academies presented significant challenges, including limited space, mature trees, and substantial level changes. OOBE’s design team skillfully transformed these constraints into opportunities.

At Oasis Academy, a 14-meter level change required creative solutions for accessibility while preserving mature trees. The design features traversing walls, viewing terraces, amphitheatres, a BMX pump track, and sports pitches. These elements meet the academy’s needs and enhance the site’s aesthetic.

THE CONCEPT & DEVELOPMENT

Waterhead Academy faced similar issues with its undersized plot and varying levels. OOBE incorporated amphitheatres, viewing terraces, a traversing wall, and enhancements to an open watercourse, creating a dynamic and interactive environment. Across all three schemes, OOBE included a wide range of sporting provisions, addressing constraints such as Public Rights of Way (PROWs), open watercourses, and level changes exceeding 10 meters. The client praised OOBE’s ability to turn site challenges into advantages, creating practical and inspiring outdoor spaces.

RESULTS

Our designs for the new Academies in Oldham demonstrate a capability to transform complex sites into vibrant, multifunctional environments. Our creative approach ensures that these academies will offer enriching experiences for students while addressing practical site constraints. The result is a series of educational landscapes that are both unique and inspiring.
